Mary Zegler Obituary

Zegler, Mary Ann (DiPietro)

On July 12, Mary Ann Zegler, 85, of Bethel Park passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a short illness.

Mary Ann is survived by her beloved husband, Fred; loving mother of Sharon (Bill) Knox, Sue (Doug) Shaffer, and Sandy (Chris) Passodelis; proud and devoted grandmother of Alex (Sabrina Haran) and Marissa (Spencer Strayer) Knox, Victoria and Oliva Shaffer, and Joe, Steve, and Sophia Passodelis.  Cherished sister of Carl (Kris) and Ray (Nancy) DiPietro.  Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Margaret DiPietro.

Mary Ann was born on January 4, 1938, in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood.  She attended Elizabeth Seton High School where she formed many lifelong friendships.  Throughout high school, she worked at Blue Bonnet Bakery in Brookline always taking leftover baked goods to the nuns at the Convent.  After Business School, she worked for US Steel in downtown Pittsburgh.  Mary Ann loved to dance, so she often frequented The Grove in Castle Shannon, where she met her husband, Fred.  They married August 9, 1958.

Mary Ann loved her family, supporting them and always putting their needs ahead of her own.  She was a devout Catholic, dedicated to her faith and helping others.  She was a fabulous cook and loved hosting Sunday dinners for her family.  Mary Ann had an upbeat outlook on life.  She was always happy and looked for the positive in every situation.  Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who knew and loved her.

Mary Ann was an active member of St. Valentine’s Christian Mothers and the Bethel Park Historical Society.  Exercise was always a big part of her life; in her 80’s she was still cutting the grass and counting steps on her Fit-Bit.  She participated in many exercise programs at the Bethel Park Community Center. In her later years her motto was “I’m still kicking, just not as high.”

Celebrate Mary Ann’s life with her family on Sunday, July 16th from 2-8 PM at Paul Henney Funeral Home, 5570 Library Rd., Bethel Park, PA.  Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Hope Parish (St. Valentine Church,) Bethel Park, PA at 10:00 Monday, July 17th.  Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray, PA.  In lieu of flowers or donations, please take a loved one to dinner.

The family wants to thank the St. Clair Hospital for their compassionate treatment.
